Savoy's original members

Around 1994 the big engine called a-ha began to run out of steam.  During this time, boredom set in from cabin fever during a cold Norwegian winter for the lead song-writer and co-founder of a-ha, Paul Waaktaar-Savoy.  Doubts about the future of a-ha left a need for Paul to have a musical outlet, so he set out with a repertoire of songs (some of which had been intended for a-ha) to look for a band he could call his own.  Paul's first move was to borrow drummer Frode Unneland from another Norwegian band called Chocolate Overdose.  Through some looking around he managed to gain bass-guitarist Greg Calvert.  After failed attempts to find a lead singer, his wife Lauren Savoy managed to convince Paul that he should take on the responsibility along with lead guitar.  The line-up was finally complete with Lauren joining the band initially with back-up vocals and second guitar.  With that, the rock-oriented CD Mary Is Coming was released in 1996 with the single Velvet being released in Europe and the US.

The next album, Lackluster Me, was more ambitious and the producing more polished.  Lackluster Me developed a strikingly different sound to the songs which included Lauren singing.  Though the band was still together, the bassist Greg became detached from the group, and eventually dropped out all together.

The sound of the current album, Mountains of Time, is a combination of the two previous albums.  The remaining members of Savoy--Paul, Lauren and Frode--managed to pick up Norway's Spellemannsprisen Award for Best Pop Group of 1999, even as there were signs ahead that a-ha was to reunite.  Even with the tremendous success of a-ha in 2000, Paul has proclaimed to keep his 'side-project,' so that eventually we can all look forward to another Savoy CD.
